Deptford is an interesting place. It has a rich history. This has been recognised by the adoption of a formal Conservation Area around Deptford High Street.
The separate Deptford High Street and St Paul’s Church conservation areas were designated in 1976 and 1975 respectively. In 2019 they were merge together. At the time Lewisham Council said that this enhanced level of understanding makes it more accessible, pinpoints areas of particular vulnerability and/or need for targeted action; and provides clarity on how new development may be incorporated in a sensitive manner.
A Freedom of Information request to Historic England confirms that this merged conservation area remains “at risk”. They say:
“Deptford is an area which has undergone substantive change in recent years with significant development and positive repair and refurbishment around the station and to the south of the High Street along New Cross Road. However, the northern end of the High Street and New Cross Road itself remain subject to problems with vacancy and dilapidation.”
Historic England’s website states that the conservation area is in poor condition, highly vulnerable and is deteriorating. Documents confirm that this area has been “at risk” since 2009.
Deptford is important nationally, regionally and locally. A vibrant street market, a theatre, an historic Church and much more are found here. Surely, it cannot remain “at risk” for another 25 years? Only time will tell.
