Like all local authorities, the London Borough of Lewisham accounts must be audited. Parliament has decided that there should be an opportunity for anyone interested to inspect and make copies of the accounts and all relevant documents.

These rights are enshrined in law, in Section 25 of the Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014. The statutory Public Inspection period will run between 16 June 2026 to 05 August 2026.

The National Audit Office has published a guide explaining the process. The NAO say that any interested person or journalist can inspect these accounts, related documentation and ask the auditor questions about them. The scrutiny by the public is important for local democracy.

Lewisham Council’s draft accounts for the financial year 2025/26 are available on the Council’s website. For further details and to submit comments these can be made by emailing: CoreAccountingTeam@lewisham.gov.uk
